DESIGN A RECYCLING BIN

It's time we channel our ingenuity beyond the realms of conventional home furnishings—beyond another chair, couch, or sideboard—towards a cause that can alter the course of environmental conservation in South Africa: a recycling bin.
We invite you to design, or commission the design of a recycling bin that is not only functional, but also a visually appealing piece of art that homeowners are proud to display.
This is an opportunity to design something that transcends mere utility; a product that changes behaviour, making recycling an effortless and integrated part of South African homes.

Submission Guidelines:
- Deadline for Proposals: 1st April
- Submit to: [email protected]
- Selection Panel: A committee of 5 leading designers (to be announced shortly) will review submissions. The top 5 designs will be showcased at Decorex.
- Prototype Production: The responsibility of producing a prototype, and logistics to and from the exhibition falls to the designer. If unable to produce a prototype, we will showcase your drawings and concept to the public.
- Exhibition Opportunities: Designers will have the opportunity to take orders for their bins directly from the exhibition.

Things to Consider When Designing a Recycling Bin
(Designs do not have to factor in ALL of these considerations, they are just guidelines)
User Experience
The design should prioritise ease of use, encouraging consistent recycling habits. Consider aspects such as the opening mechanism, compartmentalisation for different recyclables (e.g., glass, paper, plastics), and clear labeling.
Aesthetics
The bin should not just be a utility object but a piece of art that enhances the space it occupies. This involves thinking about materials, colours, and forms that can complement a variety of interior styles and preferences.
Sustainability
Materials chosen for the bin should have a low environmental impact, be recyclable, or come from renewable sources. The design process itself should minimise waste and consider the product's entire lifecycle.
Cultural Relevance
Design with the South African context in mind, considering local recycling practices, materials available, and cultural aesthetics. A design that resonates with local users will be more likely to be embraced and utilised.
Durability and Maintenance
The bin should be designed for longevity, with easy-to-clean surfaces and robust mechanisms that withstand regular use.
